Document Type Definition (DTD) je dokument, ve kterém jsou detailně popsány typy elementů, atributů a jejich hodnoty, které jsou použitelné v SGML (a tedy HTML nebo XML) dokumentech. Uživatelé nikdy nevidí obsah DTD dokumentů, je na ně odkazováno pomocí elementu <!DOCTYPE>, který se uvádí v hlavičce dokumentu. Slouží k validaci obsahu dokumentu. Kdokoliv si může definovat vlastní DTD, ale většina HTML dokumentů používá jeden z DTD podle standardu W3C.
